You may have heard about some recent changes being made to the way the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) are providing you with your driving information. Plans have been made to scrap the paper counterpart licence that is usually provided, in favour of their new My Licence online system. In this article, we’ll explore what this means for you when it comes to your insurance policy.
Insurance companies are required by law to ask you to provide a copy of your photo-card driving licence as well as a copy of DVLA record relating to your entitlement to drive, and your conviction history. These details used to be held on the paper section of your driving licence. However, the paper records are no longer legally valid and you will now have to upload your driving information to the DVLA website. Here a few simple steps to let you know how you can complete this procedure.
Firstly you will need to have on hand;
- Your driving licence number (found on the photo-card, in section 5 – next to your photo)
- Your National Insurance Number
- The postcode of the address shown on your licence
Once you have all of the appropriate information on hand you will then need to go to the DVLA Government website and follow these simple steps;
- Navigate to “Share your licence information”
- Click the option to generate a code which will open up an option to “View, print or save your licence information”.
- The “Save” option will produce a PDF of the driver information, which can be saved on your computer.
- Once this PDF has been saved, email it to your insurer along with the copy of your photo-card (front and back)
