A new government scheme is being introduced on September 1st with the aim of cutting carbon emissions. E10 will help to reduce the amount of fossil fuels used to power the UK’s cars. Currently, the standard grade of petrol is E5 and is expected to be phased out in the coming years.
But, what exactly is E10 and how will it affect you as a driver? Read on to get the full low down on the new changes.
What is E10?
E10 petrol includes up to 10% renewable ethanol, a low-carbon fuel that can be blended into regular gasoline to minimise the amount of fossil fuel.
The UK will join other countries such as Australia and Brazil that are already using E10.
Will my car run on E10?
Around 95% of cars, vans, motorcycles, and mopeds on the UK’s roads will run on E10. According to reports, most cars built after 2011 should be able to use the new fuel grade.
It’s advisable that all drivers and riders should check if their vehicle can use the new grade of petrol. Luckily, the government has created a website where you can check. You will need to have the vehicle model, engine size, and year it was manufactured.
Will E10 be available at all petrol stations?
Almost all petrol stations in England, Scotland, and Wales will sell E10 fuel.
We expect the rollout in Northern Ireland to take place in early 2022, pending legislative approval.
Can I continue to use E5 Petrol?
Yes, most garages will continue to stock E5 petrol as well as E10. It is also worth noting that some smaller or out-of-town garages may only carry E5 for some time.
Will E10 affect my diesel or electric vehicle?
No, the new grade of petrol and only affects petrol cars, vans, motorcycles, and mopeds. Diesel and E-Vehicles can carry on as normal.
Why are we changing from E5 to E10?
The change is being introduced to help reduce transport-related CO2 emissions. It is estimated that switching to E10 will reduce CO2 emissions in the UK by 750,000 tonnes per year, which is comparable to taking 350,000 cars off the road.
Is E10 better for the environment?
Yes, it is better for the environment compared to the standard E5 grade. E10 reduces the reliance on non-renewable fossil fuels. Renewable ethanol is an alcohol-based biofuel that can be made from corn, sugar cane, or waste paper. Because biomass absorbs CO2 as it grows, ethanol production is considered carbon neutral in the atmosphere.
What if my car doesn’t accept E10?
Don’t worry, E5 grade will still be available at most garages.
What if I accidentally use the wrong type of fuel?
Firstly, don’t panic! Even without the new fuel complications, some 150,000 Britons put the wrong fuel in their cars each year.
Whatever you do, do not turn on the ignition. Any damage from misfueling is caused when the engine is started. Put the car into neutral and push it to a safe place. Call your breakdown service and make them aware of the situation. Then contact your insurance provider.
Am I covered by insurance if I missfuel?
That depends on the policy you have. Check the policy document if your insurance will cover you if you misfuel. Even if you haven’t made the mistake of using the wrong fuel, check that you are covered for misfuelling.
